I think Juan Pablo Montoya is our next Rookie of the Year. Would it be cool if he won Daytona his first attempt? Pay attention to that question. It will be very important in the near future.

I amaze my Self with my brilliance most of the time. When I originally set up On a Quest on old Blogger (being the technical genius that I am) I didn’t know I could have more than one blog on the same user and password. I had sent my Self an invite so I could have both blogs on the same dash board. Anyhoo…when I changed to the new blogger at The Church, On a Quest did not change. Then I , of course couldn’t remember the user and p.w. and I had set this up when I had AOL and don’t have access to the email address any longer. Anyway I couldn’t post here. Now I finally figured out what user name I had used to set this up. Guess what the user name was that I couldn’t for the life of me figure out? My friggin‘ name. DUH.
So……I am up and running again.

There is a strong sandstorm blowing at check point 2 of the race. Helicopter’s cannot fly in the conditions and officials have decided to remove the last 134 Kilometer’s stopping at 407.6. The competitor’s will then drive on the tarmac u
p to Atar, end of Stage 7 and location of tomorrow’s rest day. Stat’s show Robby and Andy in 13th place in the stage, and 16th place overall at this point.

Stage Five Report: Ouarzazate – Tan tan
While Carlos Sainz won the fifth stage of the 2007 Dakar, much of the buzz in the bivouac surrounded the impressive performance of American Robby Gordon and his Monster Hummer. Team Dakar USA was relegated to a 77th place start based on their finish in the previous stage. Gordon charged his black Monster Energy Hummer to a 15th place finish in the stage which moved him up to 36th in the overall classification. The finish was the best for the day in the Open Category.

“The tires that Toyo brought to Dakar have been spectacular and it really showed today in the very rocky track. We passed quite a few cars today by leaving the track and we punished the tires and they survived extremely well. Our finish today will get us a much better start tomorrow so we are looking at getting the Hummer closer to the front so we can contend for stage wins. Much has happened so far but you have to realize that this race is just five days old and there is a lot of racing left. Our team is working hard and since we solved our fuel problem the Hummer is running exceptionally well. We are going to push hard and make something happen!”

Robby Gordon – Andy Grider- Dakar Rally Stage 5 Update
Stage 5, the 325km special was the first visit by the competitors to the Atlas Mountains in new route that took them into the Atlas mountains in Morocco would start on winding tracks with several rivers to cross at the end. On smoother roads and throughout the journey, rocks and puncture’s would play a role in the outcome.
Robby and Andy made up a little ground today after yesterday’s uh…fiasco. They have advanced overall from 49th yesterday to 36th today. As Fly say’s:“Can’t have a race without Robby getting in some trouble with the powers that be.” Look’s like another 13:00 penalty today. Speeding again, perhaps? Deviating off the course? Nearly running over spectator’s? We will just have to wait and see.

Don’t forget that when you want details about Robby and Andy’s days, that’s the place to go. Remember the time zone difference and the fact that he is a little busy right now and be patient. ** Update on the limb…I am out of the wheelchair and sorta walking with some mechanical assistance and a new torture device to keep my ankle from being permanently facing forward, and keeping it from stiffening in an odd an interesting way. From behind, I am told I look like some kind of a creature trying to walk, instead of having that cute little ladylike duck walk I had before. Trust me it ain’t a perty site.
But I am healing beautifully. Doc says it will be good as it will ever get at the anniversery of the Great Event.

Robby Gordon – Andy Grider -Tragic Dakar Update Stage 4 & ‘Scopes for Stage 5
The death of South African motorcycle rider Elmer Symons overshadowed Stage 4 of the Dakar Rally in Morocco.
Dakar.com states that the KTM rider, a 29-year-old resident of the United States, was killed in a crash on the sandy 405km stage between Er Rachidia and Ouarzazate.
He had been taking part in his first Dakar as a competitor, helped by his brother Kingsley, after twice being involved as part of an assistance team.
Symons had been 18th overall in the event
The race has now claimed 49 lives in its 29-year existence, 24 of them competitors.
Last year in two seperate incidentces, Australian motorcyclist Andy Caldecott was killed in a crash, and two children were killed by Rally vehicles. The year before, motorcyclists Juan Manuel Perez of Spain and Italy’s Fabrizio Meoni were killed while competing.

The Dakar Rally is not like a NASCAR race. Dakar is the most grueling, dangerous race in existance. Each day the terrain is different. The sands in each stage are different. Totally different. From course to fine, fine grit. Each type of sand affect’s how the vehicle handles, and it’s all different. Then there is the mud. The dust can be so thick they can’t see the end of their vehicle. Camel Grass, which feels to a driver like they just hit a huge ridge of rock out of the middle of nowhere. Did you notice, on Robby’s videos, the ravine/drop off on Robby’s left side?
Have you noticed how, as the vehicles are ripping round corners, there are people, children… right there on the side of the road, and they dive to get out of the way. This is crazy racin’. Robby is driving as hard as he can, virtually blind, having no clue what is in front of him, and Andy is his eyes. The communication and skill of both Robby and Andy must be in perfect sync.

Africa begins to show her many traps in today’s stage. This was the competitors’ first opportunity to see the dunes in the 2007 Dakar Rally. Today’s stage was a test of the competitor’s patience and endurance.
Gordon had high hopes for today’s special which was 405km over terrain that was well suited to both the H3 and Robby Gordon’s driving style. He felt that this Moroccan stage from Er Richida to Ouarzazate would have given both he and navigator Andy Grider the chance to showcase the team’s speed.
Contaminated fuel caused the Team Monster Energy/Toyo Tire/Hummer to have less horsepower than the H3 race engine is capable of producing and never allowed the team to really show their strengths.
“Our goal was to come here and win,” said Gordon as he returned to the bivouac. We have been plagued with bad luck, but we won’t let it get us down. This is a long rally and we must put the bad luck behind us and keep moving forward.”
As the team prepares the H3 for the following day’s special to Tan Tan they believe that the fuel issue has been resolved. The rocky terrain of the stage 6 special will be a favorable environment for the Hummer to regain momentum and to improve the overall standing of the team.

Robby and Andy had a day, with a few issues, as their ‘scope showed. They had an issue or two…
( eek!) and a 13:00 penalty, uh…maybe driving a bit fast… but are still 22nd overall.
Robby Gordon always been very Fan approachable and appreciative. Andy is a really soft spoken guy…You would never know they must both be freaking crazy.

Bobby Hamilton May 29, 1957 — January 7, 2007- RIP
Bobby Hamilton passed away yesterday at his home, surrounded by his loved one’s.
He was only 49, the same age I will be at the end of this month.
Bobby lived a life and conquered adversity like no one else. He quit school at 13, and began to work and break into racing. He supported himself from that age on, focusing on his dream to race, and his family.
He began his career at Nashville Speedway USA, and won his first Track Championship there in 1987.
Bobby broke into the Winston Cup ranks different than most driver’s. He was asked to drive one of the “movie cars” for the film Days of Thunder, qualifying fifth in a movie car at the 1989 AutoWorks 500 in Phoenix. The car was the #51 Exxon-sponsored machine, portrayed in the movie as being driven by “Rowdy Burns”.
I always loved Bobby’s rough, tough kind of attitude. He took that attitude when he found out he had cancer. He looked at it as if he were in a race. He was going to win.
I lost m
y mother in 1999 to the same type of cancer that Bobby had, and it spread to her brain. Very quickly. She was diagnosed on Dec. 24, 1998 and passed away Feb. 19, 1999. We kept her at home, where she wanted to be, and we were all at her side when she passed. I will never stop missing her.
My heart, and prayers of comfort and strength are with Bobby’s family and loved one’s. 
He raced a hard, grueling race….and fought until the end. Tho the world has lost Bobby, he has won the Ultimate Race and is standing in the Ultimate Winner’s Circle, being congratulated by his old racing buddies, family and friend’s he hasn’t seen for a while. He is standing with the Ultimate Trophy held high over his head. The Trophy of Eternal Life. Hopefully we will All see him again.
In the mean time, Bobby will teach my Mom all about why her daughter has come down with LugNutZ Disease.
We will miss you, Bobby. Godspeed and Rest in Peace.

Stage 2 results from Dakar.com
Pending validation, Spaniard Carlos Sainz (VW) won the second special scratch time stage, 29″ ahead of his countryman Nani Roma (Mitsu) and Frenchman Luc Alphand (Mitsu), both scoring the same time. Victorious in the 1st special stage yesterday, Portuguese driver Carlos Sousa (VW), 9th today, nonetheless remained overall leader, 45″ ahead of Sainz. In the Open category, Eric Vigouroux was triumphant in his Chevrolet, with the 38th-placed scratch time. Finally, in the production category, Portugal’s Adelio Machado (Toyota) was victorious with the 40th placed scratch time.
Team Dakar USA with Robby driving and Andy navigating finished 46th, are ranking 18th overall at the end of stage 2. Their time was 02:40:05 with a variation (time behind the leader) of 00:18:08. Way to go Team Dakar USA!! Great driving that Monster Hummer!
Both Robby and Andy’s ‘scope’s are awesome for Stage 3.

With the 13th best provisional scratch time of 1’29’22, American Robby Gordon recorded the best time for the Open category in this first special stage.

Here is a quick update on Robby Gordon and Andy Grider.
Robby Gordon quote after the first Stage:
“The stage was very tight and technical and the sand was soft and deep. We had a good race going but we got stuck trying to avoid hitting some fans. I would say we lost close to five minutes by being bogged down. That was the biggest problem. We had a couple of technical issues with the truck. The clutch was slipping so we had to baby it a bit. Overall we are going to be ok. I’m satisfied with how we are going to stack up against the competition.”
Stage 2 is a challenging course with a lot of ravines. That means stay on course…or you may fall a long way down.
In case you are new to following the Dakar Rally, the race spans six countries and two continents. There were 185 cars, 240 motorcycles and 80 trucks set for the first stage, which begans in Lisbon.
Andy Grider, Navigator, who is a multi- Baja champion and finished 3rd in the Rally Tunisia in 2005 on a motorcycle, is a kind of co-pilot for Robby Gordon. They have already proved themselves as a successful team by putting their skills together to claim a victory in the 2006 Baja 1000.
