NBC Dateline “sting” aimed at NASCAR

I am writing this post with a disappointed, angry and heavy heart. I struggled all night and all day on posting about it or not.
Yesterday morning,
Marc, Editor and Author of Full Throttle**, alerted me to a breaking news story by **Michelle Maulkin, regarding an apparent Dateline NBC solicitation to Muslim groups. **Marc wrote an excellent post regarding the subject today.
Marc pointed me to three different links. The first link was to a post titled
NBC: Staging the News again? . In that post Michelle Maulkin states that a source who monitors political e-mail lists had sent her a copy of an email solicitation dated Monday, March 27, 2006 13:05:54 -0800 (PST).
The Subject line was:
“Looking for Muslim Males to participate in NBC Dateline Segment”. The email, (you can read it in full at The Haba’ib thanks to LGF ) went on to explain how the e-mail’s author, Tarek El-Messidi had been “talking with a producer of the NBC Dateline show and he is in the process of filming a piece on anti-Muslim and anti-Arab discrimination in the USA. They are looking for some Muslim male candidates for their show who would be willing to go to non-Muslim gatherings and see if they attract any discriminatory comments or actions while being filmed.”
**Michelle is a fearless, well-known and well-respected journalist with an
impressive resume and an independent spirit. If she speaks out on a controversial subject or expose, people listen. She has justifiably earned the trust of many readers.**
Her exact words at the end of the post were: “Catch that? The apparent “sting” involves targeting NASCAR and other sporting events. ‘Cause that’s presumably where the fair and balanced NBC news staff thinks all the bigots are.” My ears perked up a little more.
In Michelle’s updated,
“ALL THE NEWS THAT’S FIT TO STAGE” she states that an NBC official had confirmed that NBC Dateline was indeed working on a story regarding NASCAR and racism. Michelle had also post a few responses to her first post regarding the issue. Michelle also posted a link to Little Green Footballs , where extensive research was done on the purported author of the original email solicitation Tarek El-Messidi.
The next
update publishes an updated e-mail from Tarek El- Messidi stating that the date had been changed to April 8
According to
NASCAR.com “NASCAR said NBC’s Dateline NBC confirmed it was sending Muslim-looking men to a race, along with a camera crew to film fans’ reactions. The NBC crew was “apparently on site in Martinsville, Virginia, walked around and no one bothered them,” NASCAR representative Ramsey Poston said Wednesday.
“It is outrageous that a news organization of NBC’s stature would stoop to the level of going out to create news instead of reporting news,” Poston said.
NBC has blatantly attempted to provoke and stir up anti-Muslim reactions from spectators at last week’s race in Virginia and then, after failing at that attempt, planned
to do it again at the Texas race. This type of staged journalism has crossed the line of decency into pure exploitation.”
“Dateline is looking into this story,”
NBC said in a statement.
“We were intrigued by the results of a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll and other articles regarding increasing anti-Muslim sentiments in the United States. “It’s very early on in our Newsgathering process, but be assured we will be visiting a number of locations across the country and are confident that our reporting team is pursuing this story in a fair manner,” it said.

A FAIR MANNER??

Just how far will NBC or any other major news provider go to create “news”?

NBC went to Martinsville. Nothing happened. Therefore,…instead of accepting that the average NASCAR fan is not a hateful bigot, they decide to go to the race in Texas. There is probably a bigot or two there. It seems to me, NBC is determined to create a story to prove that NASCAR fans are bigots one way or another. Maybe the NASCAR fans in Virginia are geographically, a little too far “North”. Martinsville must not be the “typical” NASCAR race, where the “real” NASCAR fans go. I imagine that Fontana, Las Vegas and Phoenix are in that catagory also. It also seems to me that NBC wants to feed the tension that has already divided our country into an us vs. them posture, be it Christian vs. Muslim, Black vs. White, Democrat vs. Republican. Excuse my language but FUCK delivering the news in a non-biased, fair and objective way. It just doen’t happen anymore. Fox is just as bad as CNN and CBS is as bad as NBC and ABC etc…etc…ad nauseum. They all stage and they all slant and they all lie.

Yes, there are bigots in the U.S. Lot’s of them. A few NASCAR fans are bigots. We saw that a little when Bill Lester made history a few weeks ago. NASCAR fans are passionate about many things. The thing NASCAR fans are all passionate about, and agree that they are passionate about is stock car racing. That is about it.
NASCAR fans have very different views about many things and have no problems voicing their differences.

I have to wonder how far NBC would go to get their story. Would they go so far as to encourage the antagonism? Would they seek out and then set up the one drunken asshole in the stands, the one we have all seen, heard or smelled or seen puke at a race? I think they would. That one NASCAR fan is not stereotypical. Most NASCAR fans are good, hard working people enjoying the sport they love.

A few NASCAR fans are full of hatred and ugliness. You see it in chat forums and message boards. Driver bashing. Driver bashing that gets personally abusive.
People that hate themselves so much they have to take it out on strangers on the internet.
Bigots are cowards. Weak and ugly hiding behind a false bravado.

Where else do bigots hide?
In political places of power. In cloaks of religious righteousness’ behind the Bible and Church doors and pulpits. They hide behind the mask of journalism in the media.
Journalism should not be about power, corruption and exploitation unless it is an unbiased report of a true story. The daily “News” exposes and documentaries should be non-fiction. Non-fiction means TRUE. Not true is a LIE. Manipulating a story to create the outcome you want is nothing more than cheap theatrics. I held NBC to a higher standard than that.
NASCAR spokesperson Ramsey Poston said it best on Wednesday.
“It is outrageous that a news organization of NBC’s stature would stoop to the level of going out to create news instead of reporting news,” Poston said.
“Any legitimate journalist in America should be embarrassed by this stunt. The obvious intent by NBC was to evoke reaction, and we are confident our fans won’t take the bait,” he said.

NASCAR Fans…please do not take the bait. Do not make it a politically based agenda. It is a social issue. Blame is a social issue. Bigotry and hatred are social issues. Do not be bigots. Do not blame the Democrats or the Republicans, or Muslims or Christians, or women writers or terrorists or anything else but ourselves as human beings. We have created these Media Monster’s by eating it up, reacting and pointing the finger at everyone else, without taking deep looks at ourselves. NASCAR Fans have character. The majority of the citizen’s of the United States have character. If you blame anyone or anything and react to make this a controversy, You are giving NBC reaction. If we need to point a finger at someone, we need to point it at ourselves for being so gullible. We need to expect and demand more from our Broadcasting Company’s and Journalists. We need to expect more tolerance of diversity, and humanity and demand it from our leaders. We need to expect more from our Selves.

NASCAR needs to have a race day that honors all Muslims. Show them what NASCAR’s dedication to Diversity can really mean.

In the meantime, here is some food for thought…

What if Jeff Gordon really was Gay? ( The driver basher’s *bigots* are just jealous…he is rich, free and attracts beautiful women. He has class, something that bigots can never have)

What if Dale Earnhardt Jr. was homosexual and came out of the closet to Dave Despain on Wind Tunnel? ( Oh my goodness, how would that go over? ROFLAO at the thought of it.)

What if Tony Stewart was a really a woman, struggling inside because she knows she should have been a man? Just waiting for that perfect time to have the sex change surgery?

What if the secret cam has caught something like Elliot cross-dressing?

What if Kurt and Kyle Busch really are Aliens and there really is a conspiracy to take over the World and NASCAR is protecting us?

Now those would be a stories worthy of hidden camera’s and reaction. They might be good stories for Jr’s Back in the Day, in about 5 years.

Bill Maher is going to have a ball with this one…

  1. Errrr….uhhhhh…..I am totally speechless!

  2. Your hero Malkin called for the internment of muslims.

Guess that makes her a bigot too huh?

Nice segue from NBC planting muslim troublemakers at races to embracing deviant sexual behavior.

Best laugh I’ve had all day.

    Did you see that?

I was able to disagree with your post without calling you a name. Give it a try sometime. It’s not hard to do.

  3. Just a quick note on this bright sunny day in the Philippines. (95 with a cloudless sky)

Dateline appears to have had an epiphany. Or just flat out got scared after being ecposed as a journalist hack.

They won’t be at Texas this weekend. shucks, I was looking forward to the “Welcome Dateline Muslim Stunt Double” signs posted all over TMS.

And BTW Chris, Malkin never advocated “internment of muslims.” Agreed you never called anyone names, you just posted a disingenious, at best, remark.

And secondly while you didn’t call Clance’ any names you did state those that were part of the sting operation were “muslim troublemakers.”

    Just for info… that’s called pot, kettle….black.

  4. Yeah Booouy!!!!! There is a lot of “non-fiction” tp what you are saying.

  5. Is someone out to get Nascar? I can not believe this whole situation on what NBC did during the Martinsville race. And people wonder why right after a driver is in an accident and the network is right there in their face that they are upset…give these guys a break. What is NBC trying to accomplish?

I believe NBC is just upset because they lost one of the most watched sports on TV in their contract.

I am happy NBC is going away..I couldn’t take another season with Benny and Wally but I do hope ESPN gets Allen Bestwick, he is the only class of that field and I do miss him on the Nascar show on SPEED vice Dave Despain.

    Have a great day.

    Tom

  6. What do you expect from the show that had to rig an SUV to explode into flames to prove they blow up when hit by another vehicle? Dateline has always rigged the news to get ratings, so this latest debacle is not at all surprising.

  7. I did tell Chris that he should call NBC and volunteer to be the NASCAR bigot they were looking for.
I believe that is what he is referring to…
That’s my story and I am stickin’ to it.
You welcome for the traffic, Chris.
I too am never afraid to show my face.

  8. Marc, Malkin did call for internment.

She even wrote a book about it.

The comment was directed at Clance for coming on my site and doing a bit of name calling.

Which is behavior that I expect from a typical liberal. Their arguments are so weak that name calling is all they have left.

Anybody that says NASCAR should have a Muslim Appreciation Day isn’t wrapped too tight anyway.

BTW, muslims hang or behead homos. So your whole group hug, kumbaya, lets all get along post is asinine.

  9. You beat me to it. I wasn’t sure if I should post my take on Rev’ Jims RantsnRaves,or Lift that Torch, etc. I will still post my take, probably on both of them. Darn, you even beat me to one of my favorite sources, (Michelle Maulkin). Great post, btw.

  10. BUHHHHH-bye now…I have now moved on to the Lone Star State and more current events.

  11. I proved my point about bigotry…it is hateful and ugly…and can never ever admit they might just be wrong.
Thank goodness all NASCAR fans are notthe bigots that NBC was looking for.
    Blessed Be…to ALL.

  12. notthe
Speaking typoneese again…damn that new wrapped, I mean warped brain girdle.
